Rørospols dance workshop on 6 October

The dance workshop on the afternoon of 6 October will be in Norwegian Rørospols, taught by Pat Lindop and me, Michael Cade-Stewart. Rørospols is a very popular dance in both Norway and Sweden. In Sweden (and England) it's often know as just "pols".

The dance is a fairly brisk polska-type dance, with a series of set moves that are usually danced in order (with no set timing for each move). It's varied and fun, and dancers are encouraged to introduce flourishes and variations once they've got the basics. We'll teach some of these in the workshop.

The workshop will be suitable for dancers of all abilities, and no partner needed. We recommend that you wear smooth-soled shoes that are comfortable to dance in, if possible.

October Scandi Dance

The first event of the new season will be on Saturday 6 October!

There'll be an afternoon dance workshop, a session, an evening Bal, and an affordable communal dinner. Oh, and free "indoor camping"; what more could you want?

The meal and the sleeping space will only be available to those who book before 1 October -- so email us at ketton.scandi@gmail.com, stating clearly what you want to attend (see below). Please also say if you would like a meal that is NOT vegetarian.

Exciting news!

The first dance in Ketton after the summer will be on Saturday 6 October!

But that's not all! 

For the first time, we will able to offer a low-cost communal meal and "indoor camping" at the Northwick Arms.  Those who book in advance will be able to join us for the meal, and camp or "indoor camp" in the hall afterwards. If successful, we hope to be able to extend this offer this at all of our events from now on.

There will also be dance and music workshops in the afternoon, and a brief  dance workshop at the start of the evening.  Full details soon; save the date!

Evening Dance Workshops at the Midsummer Scandi Dance

The last Scandi Dance of the season will take place on Saturday 23 June (see my last post for full details), and I'm pleased to say that some of the most exciting young musicians of the UK scene are expected. Don't miss it!

The evening dance workshop will will focus on general tips and techniques for dancing "turning" polska, like those from Boda and Bingsjö. Often seen as the definitive Scandi dance, turning polskas are danced a lot in the centre and north of Sweden. The workshop will run from 8:20 for just over an hour, and will be led by me, Michael Cade-Stewart.

In order to help everyone get straight on the dance-floor, I will teach a simple generic step for the turn, but I'll also introduce the style of dancing polska from Rättvik, in Dalarna. This lovely version has steps which are similar to "normal" Bingsjö polska, but different in important ways. A useful step to have in your repertoire (not least for dancing to Rättvikpolska tunes!)

Followed by introductory dance workshops at 8:20, and then a social dance into the night: vals, polska, polka, shottis, slängpolska, pols, and many more. No experience or partner necessary. Suggested donation: £5 / £3 (core musicians free).

Why not go for a meal at the pub before the evening dance? Great food cooked on the premises, and lovely wines. Good walks round the village, too.
